This in-depth biography of Dwight D. Eisenhower offers fresh perspectives, not only on World War II and the Korean War, but also on the Cold War, the civil rights movement, and Vietnam.

Here readers will meet the whole man for the first time. Perret brings together a wealth of materials made available only in recent years. The result is nothing less than an original, authoritative and provocative portrait of Eisenhower, as a man, a soldier and a president. These new sources finally resolve the many questions that have, until now, been matters only of speculation and rumor. From his alleged affair with Kay Summersby, his wartime driver to how he brought the Korean War to an end within months of becoming President, readers will find Geoffrey Perret's Eisenhower to be a book worthy of its remarkable and controversial subject.

Background Information

World War II was fought between the Allies and the Axis powers between 1939 and 1945. The Cold War was the worldwide conflict between the western democracies and Communist states, particularly the USSR. The civil rights movement, which aimed to deliver the rights assured black Americans in the post-Civil-War amendments, reached its peak of activity in the 1960's. The Korean War was fought by United Nations forces, primarily from the United States, against the North Korean invaders of the South, and their Chinese allies.
