George Willcox McIver's life spanned a time of dramatic transformation in American history. A native of Davidson, North Carolina, McIver lived through the Civil War, fought in the Spanish-American War and World War I, and served in posts across the world during his illustrious military career. Jonathan Dembo has edited and annotated McIver's autobiography, published here for the first time.

Background Information

North Carolina, part of the Deep South, was the scene of important battles in the Revolutionary and Civil wars. The Spanish-American War was a militarily easy conquest by the United States to eliminate the last vestiges of the Spanish colonial empire. World War I started in August 1914 and ended in November 1918, but American participation did not begin at all until 1917 and not on a large scale until the final year.
