Dwight D. Eisenhower rose above many more senior American officers to become Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe and later President of the United States. World War II was fought between the Allies and the Axis powers between 1939 and 1945. On D-Day, June 5, 1944, the Allies invaded France on the beaches of Normandy and surprised the Germans who had expected their attack at Calais.
